Sukkur IBA bids farewell to 240 graduating students

SUKKUR: The Sukkur Institute of Business Administration (IBA) held its fourth convocation on Saturday. A total of 240 graduates were awarded degrees in masters and bachelors of business administration, electrical engineering, computer science and software engineering and education.

Four gold medals, one silver and one bronze medal were awarded to high achieving students in different academic programmes.

Sindh minister for education Jam Mehtab Hussain Dahar and chairperson of the Higher Education Commission (HEC) Dr Mukhtar Ahmed were chief guests at the event.

In his welcome address, Sukkur IBA dean and director Professor Nisar Ahmed Siddiqui thanked the guests, graduating students, parents and media for showing their interest and commitment to education in Sindh.

He announced the establishment of a fabricating laboratory in collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA, which aims to promote creativity and scientific thinking.

Besides this, he also announced the establishment of a science planetarium to promote science education and a Centre of Excellence in Education to train teachers of Sindh.

Dr Ahmed appreciated the efforts of the director and faculty of Sukkur IBA and said, “They are busy bringing positive changes in the lives of their students.”

He said we are fortunate enough to have 65% youth out of the total population of 200 million people in Pakistan. Giving example of developed nations, he said, “They have achieved their goals through education.”

Referring to the history of Islam, he said Muslims contributed a lot in every aspect of life. “Since the conversion of the Universities Grant Commission into the HEC we have added 183 universities throughout Pakistan, out of which 50 are in Sindh alone,” he explained.

“We still are short of human resources and even today we have only 11,600 PhDs throughout Pakistan, while we need at least 30,000 PhDs,” said Dr Ahmed.

“So far the HEC has provided scholarships to 48,453 students, because every Pakistani has the right to education,” he said, urging educational institutions to produce good human beings and not just doctors, engineers and entrepreneurs.

“As Muslims we start learning right from our birth and continue this process till our death, because education has no limits,” said Dahar.

“The people of Sukkur in general and those living in other parts of the Upper Sindh are blessed with excellent institutions like Sukkur IBA,” he praised, adding that it is a source of pride to have such institutes in Upper Sindh which not only provide high-quality education but are also easily accessible to the poor and needy.

Talking about Sukkur IBA’s community colleges, the minister said the institute is operating seven community colleges in Sukkur, Khairpur, Ghotki, Ubauro, Naushero Feroz, Dadu and Jacobabad. “We are happy that these institutions are in good hands,” he praised.

Addressing the degree recipients, he reminded them that it was about time for them to pay back their parents and the nation, because their parents have made many sacrifices to see them achieve their goals.

Later, the chief guests handed over the degrees to the graduating students. The recipients of the gold medals were Hassan Ahmed from the fall 2012 business administration batch, Umair Ali from the spring 2012 electrical engineering batch, Erum Asra of the fall 2012 electrical engineering batch and Muhammad Arsalan from the spring 2012 computer science batch.
