No high school in major Mohmand locality

GHALANAI: Utmanzai, a far-flung and backward yet major locality of Mohmand Agency’s Pandiali tehsil, has no high school forcing most local residents to abandon education after passing primary and middle school exams.

The people told Dawn that the area had a low literacy rate.

They said Hashim Kor and Ajmal Utmanzai areas had high and middle school buildings but the posts of teachers had yet to be approved for them.

The people said scores of children and youths of the area covered long distances by foot to schools in other areas.

They complained that the area had not a single primary school for girls and therefore, local women were without formal learning by and large. Ninth grader Saeed Gul and 10th grader Usman and Ziaur Rehman said they covered around 18 kilometers by foot to reach school in Nahqi area.

An official of the education department said the PC-4 of the opening of a high school in Hashim Kor area had been sent to the Safron ministry for approval and further action, while work on the Utmanzai middle school was incomplete.

He said around 300 local children and youths suffered due to the unavailability of high school in the neighbourhood.

The official said action on the PC-4 by the Safron was awaited.
