Quaid-i-Azam University registrar's promotion reverted

ISLAMABAD: The new syndicate of the Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU) at its second meeting on Monday reverted the promotion of the university’s registrar.

The syndicate met with Vice Chancellor Dr Javed Ashraf in the chair. Sources said the syndicate, the supreme decision-making body of the university, rejected the promotion of Registrar Dr Shafiqur Rehman from BPS-20 to BPS-21 approved by the previous syndicate in 2015.

Some officials of the university said the registrar had also been removed from the post and sent on a forced leave. However, four syndicate members Dawn spoke to neither denied nor confirmed the development. However, they confirmed the reversion of the registrar’s promotion.

After the meeting of the syndicate, the registrar’s mobile phone was found to be switched off when Dawn tried to contact him.

None of the four members of the syndicate confirmed or denied that the registrar had been removed from the post. “Since we promised with each other that we would not share any decision of the meeting with the media, I’m sorry,” said one of them, speaking on the condition of anonymity.

“We took a highly confidential decision about the registrar but it will not be shared with the media until the signing of the minutes (by tonight or tomorrow). However, the promotion of the registrar has been taken back. We also took another key decision about him,” said another syndicate member.

In 2015, Dr Rehman was sent on a forced leave by the incumbent vice chancellor on the basis of the findings of an inquiry reports. However, he was restored on the post in September 2016 when the then syndicate set aside the findings.

The registrar was accused of getting illegal promotion from BPS 20 to BPS 21 and making illegal appointments on key posts in the university administration besides other irregularities.

Despite repeated attempts, the VC also could not be approached for comments on Monday night.

A source said during the meeting it was decided that the university management and the syndicate members would not share the decisions with the media until the signing of the meeting minutes.

The syndicate took some other decisions aimed at enhancing the standard of the university. The sources said the VC expressed concerns over a recent inquiry report prepared by a three-member committee of the HEC, which pointed out massive irregularities in the university.

The report, which has been sent to the chancellor of the university, the president of Pakistan, recommended the removal of Dr Javed Ashraf from the post of VC over his alleged failure in handling the affairs of the university.
