Courier service to deliver, collect exam papers for technical education board

KARACHI: For the first time in the Sindh Board of Technical Education’s (SBTE) history, the examination question papers and answer sheets will be delivered to examination centres through a courier service.

“To cope with the menace of cheating in the technical exams, we have given a courier service the responsibility of delivering the exam papers and later collecting the answer sheets,” said SBTE Chairperson Dr Masroor Sheikh while addressing a press conference on Monday.

The matric technical examination will be starting all over Sindh from April 5 and continue till April 20. More than 3,500 students have registered for the examination that will be held at 13 different centres across the province. Five of these centres have been set up in Karachi.
Education emergency: Sindh govt to upgrade 10 technical institutions

Sheikh also announced that the examination for diploma in associative engineering will be held in May. The board offers a diploma in 24 different disciplines of engineering in which 15,000 students appear every year, he said.

Three main steps have been taken in this year’s examination in order to put an end to cheating, Sheikh said, adding that unlike the matric and intermediate boards, there is only one technical board in Sindh, which is responsible for the provision of examination papers and sheets to centres as far as Daharki and Chachro from Karachi.

“Earlier, we had to print and send the question papers a day before, which is why we chose a courier service to deliver it this time,” said Sheikh, adding that the courier service will be delivering the question papers an hour before the exam and will be collecting the answer sheets one hour after the exam finishes.

Before this, answer sheets usually reached the board office one week late but now the courier service will be delivering them the very next day.

Other than this, the board has also asked its five regional directors to visit their nearest centres during the examination process.

Complaining about the curriculum, Sheikh said that it is old and poses issues for students studying from the technical board when it comes to finding jobs.

Technical education is mostly for the lower middle class and is the second choice of most students, Sheikh said, adding that it is very rare for a student to opt for technical education as their first priority.

Sheikh was of the view that the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor project will bring job opportunities for students studying in the technical field. However, he said that the Chinese have certain standards which would need to be fulfilled by our students.

“Our students need training in their fields, but the centres are short of equipment and machinery,” he said, adding that the technical education centres should adopt the system of developed countries where students are given theoretical education in centres and learn practical work in industries.

Pointer Basics

What is a Pointer?

A pointer is a variable that stores a memory address.  Pointers are used to store the addresses of other variables or memory items.  Pointers are very useful for another type of parameter passing, usually referred to as Pass By Address.  Pointers are essential for dynamic memory allocation.

Declaring pointers:

  • Pointer declarations use the * operator.  They follow this format:
       typeName * variableName;

     int n;        // declaration of a variable n
     int * p;      // declaration of a pointer, called p

  • In the example above, p is a pointer, and its type will be specifically be referred to as "pointer to int", because it stores the address of an integer variable. We also can say its type is: int*
  • The type is important. While pointers are all the same size, as they just store a memory address, we have to know what kind of thing they are pointing TO.
      double * dptr; // a pointer to a double
      char * c1;  // a pointer to a character
      float * fptr;  // a pointer to a float

  • Note: Sometimes the notation is confusing, because different textbooks place the * differently.  The three following declarations are equivalent:
     int *p;
     int* p;
     int * p;

    All three of these declare the variable p as a pointer to an int.

Character Sequence

The string class has been briefly introduced in an earlier chapter. It is a very powerful class to handle and manipulate strings of characters. However, because strings are, in fact, sequences of characters, we can represent them also as plain arrays of elements of a character type.

For example, the following array:

char foo [20];

is an array that can store up to 20 elements of type char. It can be represented as:

Arrays and Functions

Arrays and Functions

  • Things to note about C-style arrays:
    • An array is not a type
    • An array is a primitive C-style construct that consists of many items stored consecutively and accessed through a single variable name (and indexing)
    • This is actually done by remembering the starting address of an array, and computing an offset
    • The name of an array acts as a special kind of variable -- a pointer -- which stores the starting address of the array
  • An array can be passed into a function as a parameter
    • Because an array is not a single item, the array contents are not passed "by value" as we are used to with normal variables

Array Basics

Array Basics

Definition

An array is a series of elements of the same type placed in contiguous memory locations that can be individually referenced by adding an index to a unique identifier.

That means that, for example, five values of type int can be declared as an array without having to declare 5 different variables (each with its own identifier). Instead, using an array, the five int values are stored in contiguous memory locations, and all five can be accessed using the same identifier, with the proper index.
An array is an indexed collection of data elements of the same type.
1)  Indexed means that the array elements are numbered (starting at 0).

Functions: Overloading and Default Parameters

Function Overloading

The term function overloading refers to the way C++ allows more than one function in the same scope to share the same name -- as long as they have different parameter lists
  • The rationale is that the compiler must be able to look at any function call and decide exactly which function is being invoked
  • Overloading allows intuitive function names to be used in multiple contexts
  • The parameter list can differ in number of parameters, or types of parameters, or both
  • Example: The following 3 functions are considered different and distinguishable by the compiler, as they have different parameter lists
       int Process(double num);    // function 1
       int Process(char letter);              // function 2
       int Process(double num, int position); // function 3

  • Sample calls, based on the above declarations
       int x;
       float y = 12.34;
       x = Process(3.45, 12); // invokes function 3
       x = Process('f');  // invokes function 2
       x = Process(y);  // invokes function 1 (automatic type conversion applies)

Functions

Functions

A function is a reusable portion of a program, sometimes called a procedure or subroutine.
  • Like a mini-program (or subprogram) in its own right
  • Can take in special inputs (arguments)
  • Can produce an answer value (return value)
  • Similar to the idea of a function in mathematics

Why write and use functions?

  • Divide-and-conquer
    • Can breaking up programs and algorithms into smaller, more manageable pieces
    • This makes for easier writing, testing, and debugging
    • Also easier to break up the work for team development
  • Reusability
    • Functions can be called to do their tasks anywhere in a program, as many times as needed
    • Avoids repetition of code in a program
    • Functions can be placed into libraries to be used by more than one "program"

Control Structures

Control Structures - Intro, Selection

Flow of Control:

Flow of control through any given function is implemented with three basic types of control structures:
  • Sequential: default mode. Sequential execution of code statements (one line after another) -- like following a recipe
  • Selection: used for decisions, branching -- choosing between 2 or more alternative paths. In C++, these are the types of selection statements:
    • if
    • if/else
    • switch
  • Repetition: used for looping, i.e. repeating a piece of code multiple times in a row. In C++, there are three types of loops:
    • while
    • do/while
    • for

Basic Input/Output

Basic Input/Output Until now, the example programs of previous sections provided very little interaction with the user, if any at all. Using the standard input and output library, we will be able to interact with the user by printing messages on the screen and getting the user's input from the keyboard.
C++ uses a convenient abstraction called streams to perform input and output operations in sequential media such as the screen or the keyboard. A stream is an object where a program can either insert or extract characters to/from it. We do not really need to care about many specifications about the physical media associated with the stream - we only need to know it will accept or provide characters sequentially.

The standard C++ library includes the header file iostream, where the standard input and output stream objects are declared.

Standard Output (cout)

Operators

Operators
Once we know of the existence of variables and constants, we can begin to operate with them. For that purpose, C++ integrates operators. Unlike other languages whose operators are mainly keywords, operators in C++ are mostly made of signs that are not part of the alphabet but are available in all keyboards. This makes C++ code shorter and more international, since it relies less on English words, but requires a little of learning effort in the beginning.

“We’ve all had teachers who have inspired us, who have made a difference to our lives. Teachers have the power to make or break lives. A great lesson can inspire a passion for a subject that lasts a lifetime, while lacklustre teaching can kill any desire for learning. Teachers who make a significant difference in their students’ lives - sometimes against all odds - deserve to be celebrated. The Global Teacher Prize does just that, awarding $1 million to an exceptional teacher who has made an outstanding contribution to their profession.”

This is how the Global Teacher Prize blog explains the reason for the award and Pakistan can be proud that one of its teachers is among the ten nominated for this prestigious prize.

Salima Begum teaches at the Elementary College for Women in Gilgit, Pakistan. She has helped create awareness amongst parents regarding girls’ education and its benefits. To engage her students, Salima believes that classroom activities should correspond closely to real-life situations.

Salima was born in a remote village in Pakistan. Conditions in her own education were cramped and she was fortunate to complete higher secondary level. She believes strongly in students ‘constructing’ meaning for themselves through the information they receive and holds that classroom activities should correspond closely to real-life situations. She has helped create awareness amongst parents regarding girls’ education and its benefits, pioneered a strategy of mentoring in the community and encouraged aspiration in the feeder schools that send pupils to her.

Constants and Literals

Constants
Constants are expressions with a fixed value.

Literals
Literals are used to express particular values within the source code of a program. We have already used these previously to give concrete values to variables or to express messages we wanted our programs to print out, for example, when we wrote:
a = 5;
the 5 in this piece of code was a literal constant.
Literal constants can be divided in Integer Numerals, Floating-Point Numerals, Characters, Strings and Boolean Values.
