SUKKUR: A controversy over legitimacy of MBBS course at the Ghulam Mohammed Mahar Medical College was triggered on Monday by the director general of health, Islamabad, who told reporters in Sukkur that he did not issue any instructions to the principal or administration allowing admissions for the 2016-17 batch.
His remarks came on the day the college started MBBS classes for the batch after a formal ceremony held on Saturday (March 11) where Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Syed Khurshid Ahmed Shah was the chief guest.
Recently, the ministry of health had asked the GMMMC principal and Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Medical University (SMBBMU), Larkana, vice chancellor to first make payment of penalty amounting to Rs25 million for each batch of 100 students given admissions without seeking necessary approval from the competent authorities before going ahead with the fresh admissions.
The DG Health said that the college was told that the penalty would be payable by the GMMMC or the SMBBMU and not a single penny should to collected from any of the affected students. He said the GMMMC principal and administration admitted the 2016-17 batch on their own and got the new academic season launched by Khurshid Shah on March 11.
GMMMC Principal Prof Dr Ghulam Hyder Rind was quoted as saying that Mr Shah had assured him and the college administration that he would sort out the matter with the authorities concerned and would also help get the penalty withdrawn.
Sources in the federal health ministry said that the college authorities had earlier been informed that in case of non-payment of the penalty, the passing out students would not be allowed to practise and their MBBS degree would also be issued through the SMBBMU and not by GMMMC.
They said the GMMMC might also have to face additional penalty of Rs25 million for giving admission to the fresh batch in violation of the relevant rules.
