Usman Institute of Technology (UIT), an engineering university based in Karachi, has started generating electricity from solar energy to meet the growing energy requirements of the campus with the long-term available solution.
The UIT installed 198 solar panels of 320 Watts each in January 2017 as part of its energy conservation drive that started in August 2016.
Producing a total of 60 kW, the installation now meets about 15 percent of the institute’s total power needs.
The Head of HR and Administration, UIT, Ahson Nasim, said being Pakistan’s leading technology education provider, we at UIT deem it our responsibility to educate our student, faculty and staff about energy conservation and do what’s right for the environment.
This also includes choosing the right sources of electricity; conventional power plants use a lot of non-renewable energy resources produce electrical power. Solar energy systems do not damage the environment in any way, so are good for the future of the planet.
Nasim claimed that one of the major advantages of solar energy is the lack of maintenance that is required in the long run. “The systems do need slight maintenance every now and then, but in the long run, the costs are minimal. This means that once the initial investment has been made, there is little that the owner of a solar energy system really needs to do.”
He said that as part of its energy conservation drive, the UIT also replaced normal air-conditioners with inverter ones, reduced the length of air-conditioning pipes, replaced tube lights with LED lights, besides educating students, faculty and staff on turning off all electrical equipment when not in use.
The administration of institute has planned to extend solar system installation to meet a larger portion of its power needs and reduce power costs in the coming years.
Different universities in Pakistan are working to install solar technology mainly to avoid load-shedding, using the environment-friendly and affordable electricity at their campus. Few of them are LUMS, Agriculture University, Faisalabad, University of Peshawar, The University of Lahore and etc.
