Syed Raza Ali Gilani, Higher Education Minister, Punjab on Wednesday visited the Higher Education Commission Secretariat and met Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed, Chairman Higher Education Commission (HEC) and HEC senior management. The Minister was accompanied by Dr. Zafar Iqbal Qureshi.
Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed shared with the Minister the role and achievements of HEC since its inception in 2002. He elaborated different steps taken by HEC for a strengthened quality assurance system in higher education sector across Pakistan.
He informed as to how different initiatives of HEC for human resource development and promotion of research have brought about tremendous progress in the sector.
Through different schemes of overseas, indigenous, need-based scholarships as well as Prime Minister’s Fee Reimbursement Scheme, over 200,000 faculty and students have been given scholarships, he revealed. He maintained that HEC has been playing an active role in increasing equitable access to quality higher education and encouraging relevant research activities.
He said the core objectives of HEC was to ensure equitable access to quality education, technological readiness, research and innovation, and governance and management in higher education institutions. He said HEC is the highest policy making body for higher education sector having representation from all the four provinces, adding that the Commission has a Chancellor’s Committee jointly chaired by President, Prime Minister, President of Azad Jammu & Kashmir, Governors, and Chief Ministers.
