Difference between Power And Energy

People always seem to consider Energy and Power to be the same. They even make the mistake of thinking ‘Energy and Power’ as synonyms. It is not that difficult to distinguish between Energy and power.

While energy is the ability to do work, Power is its measurement, which calculates the time by which the energy has been used. Well, Energy is what one delivers and Power is the rate at which it is delivered.

Energy:

  • Energy is defined as the capacity to do some work. It is power which is integrated over time.
  • The unit used to measure energy is joules or watt-seconds
  • ‘W’ is the symbol which denotes energy
  • Energy changes from one form to another
  • Energy is a time quantity or component
  • Various types of energy are kinetic, thermal, potential, gravitational, sound, electromagnetic, light, elastic, etc
  • Energy is known to be stored which can be used in future
  • Energy is used in moving a car, heating home, lighting night, flying an aeroplane, etc

Power:

  • Power is defined as the rate at which a specific work is done, or which the energy is transmitted.
  • The unit used to measure this is watt or joules per second
  • The symbol used to denote power is P.
  • Power cannot be transformed from one type to another
  • It is an instantaneous quantity
  • Different kinds of power are electric power, optical power, human power, etc.
  • Power quantity is not storable or cannot be stored
  • Power finds its uses in mechanical applications, electrical applications, heat applications, etc
