Minister for Literacy and Non-Formal Basic Education Punjab Dr Farrukh Javed said on Thursday the government had initiated many programmes for welfare of prisoners. The Punjab Literacy Department would launch "Taleem-e-Baalghan" programme for prisoners all over the province, the minister expressed these views in the departmental meeting regarding Punjab Non Formal Education Project for prisoners.
Secretary Literacy and NFBED Dr Naveed Ahmed Chaudhry, Additional Secretary Akram Jan, Project Director Shakeel Ahmed and concerned officers also attended the meeting. The meeting was briefed that the department had successfully completed pilot project and now a comprehensive programme will be launched. The minster hoped that prisons will not become nurseries for crime anymore and:"We will convert them into schools for better future". Farrukh Javed said the project would help to transform prisoners into productive and useful members of society.
Four months teaching courses would start across the province and literate prisoners will teach their fellow prisoners under the guidance of the literacy department, he aaded. Data from Jails of Lahore, Sahiwal, Multan, Rawalpindi, Bahawalpur, DG Khan and Mianwali had been collected and work was underway on remaining prisons, the minister said. The minister ordered the secretary Literacy and inspector general Prisons to finalise the SOPs for launching the programme.
