Education dept fails to keep its promise

LAYYAH: Hundreds of students have been deprived of IT (information technology) education for the last seven months as the district education department is yet to return 20 computers borrowed from three schools for two days.

The district government had allocated Rs46 million for purchase of computers and furniture for IT labs in schools in 2014-15.

Labs in 22 high schools were equipped with computers at a cost of Rs1.4m in each institute. Similarly 17 IT labs of elementary schools were provided with furniture and computers at a cost of Rs0.5m. The project was completed in December 2015.

In June 2016, the district administration started the process for recruitment of teachers and the district education officer (secondary education) through letter No. 3403 borrowed three computers from MC girls high school, Layyah, and 17 others from boys high school, Kotla Haji Shah, and girls high school, TDA Colony, Layyah.

The district officer (education) had pledged to return the computers to respective schools within two days.

Sources seeking anonymity told Dawn that the computers were being used by district monitoring officers and by staff in other administrative offices.

The school heads’ had requested in writing the return of the computers but after a lapse of seven months, the authorities seemed least interested in fulfilling their promise. As a result hundreds of students are being denied IT education.

When contacted District Officer (secondary education) Zulfiqar Ali said: “I have just taken over the charge and I am not aware of the situation. I will respond after looking into the matter.”

Chief Executive Officer (education) Mrs. Khalida said: “When the secondary education officer did not respond to the written requests of the school heads, they should have brought the matter into my notice.”

The CEO said she would make arrangements for return of the computers to respective schools.
