Pakistan Institute of National Affairs (PINA) arranged a seminar at a local hotel in Lahore to highlight the efforts of United We Reach, a non-profit organization, in introducing Script Based Technology in Pakistan. It is a new model of learning based on scientific teaching methodology. United We Reach has started five pilot projects in Punjab to experiment this new method. Later this technology would be made available to the masses at large in Pakistan.
The seminar was opened by Sajjad Mir and was chaired by Sabahat Rafique, Lieutenant General Mohammad Asghar, and PINA’s Secretary General Altaf Hassan Qureshi.
Addressing the seminar Sabahat Rafique, the Executive Director of United We Reach, told the audience that this new method of learning and teaching was aimed at the poor segment of the society with a purpose to inculcate in children entrepreneurial skills. She said that students in Pakistan, even after attaining higher education had been found running from post to pillar in search of jobs. This challenge of finding a job leaves students and their families, said Rafique, underprivileged and mentally distressed. It is to address these issues, that a new model of learning and teaching is being introduced, which added Rafique would enable the children to think critically. She did not mince words in criticizing the existing system of education in Pakistan based mostly on rote learning. She pointed out that based on the colonial system, Pakistan’s education system is producing static minds.
The idea behind Script based Technology is to provide the teachers in schools, specially built tablets. Another set of tablets would be given to students. These tablets would have a planner for the teachers while students would get their lessons. The tablets would be continuously monitored, by the United We Reach to assess the performance of the teachers and the progress of the students. “In Pakistan, a considerable amount is spent on building the infrastructure of schools and colleges, but negligible attention is given to the quality of education,” Sabahat said.
Lieutenant General (r) Mohammad Asghar former Rector National University of Sciences and Technology had introduced the Creative Learning System in the University to provide the scholarship to deserving students who otherwise could not afford a decent education. Sabahat joined Asghar in his crusade to make education accessible to the deserving children in Pakistan, and eventually managed a donation of $ 2 million for Creative Learning System. Appreciating the efforts of United We Reach, Asghar said that we needed an education system that should eliminate backwardness and poverty.
Altaf Hassan Qureshi, the Secretary General PINA, welcomed Sabahat Rafique’s effort and wished her good luck in her future endeavours.
MPA Punjab Assembly Dr. FarzanaNazir, Educationist Salma Awan, columnist Dr Hussain Piracha, intellectual Javed Nawaz, and columnist Naeem Masood appreciated the concept of this new system.
