Govt approves co-education in primary schools

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa cabinet on Monday made a landmark decision to introduce coeducation at primary level in the province and declared that only women teachers would be appointed to primary schools in future.

“The government will establish schools where boys and girls can study together,” said adviser to the chief minister on information Mushtaq Ghani while giving details to the media about the cabinet’s meeting here.

Teachers to stage protest outside Chief Minister House

KARACHI: Sindh Professors and Lecturers Association (SPLA) will hold a general body meeting on February 15 at DJ Science College and will march towards the CM House, announced the central president of SPLA, Ferozuddin Siddiqui on Monday.

“Teachers will also stage a sit-in in front of CM House if their demands are not met,” said Siddiqui.

Primary teachers unhappy with violation of transfer criteria

SUKKUR: Hundreds of primary teachers are protesting in Sukkur against their transfers to far-flung rural areas by the administration.

Most Urdu speaking teachers have been transferred to primary schools in rural areas, with those retiring within the next six to eight months also included in the list. However, favourites of Zaibunnisa Mangi, the director of primary education, Sukkur, have been not transferred.

Education dept to form Provincial Curriculum Authority

KARACHI: To maintain the quality and training of teachers, mould the curriculum according to modern needs and set goals for the education system, the provincial education and literary department is considering the formation of a ‘Provincial Curriculum Authority’.

This was stated by the department’s minister Jam Mehtab Hussain Dahar during a meeting with the founder of Zindagi Trust, Shahzad Roy, on Monday. Along with the minister, secretary education schools Mustafa Jamal Syed and additional secretary Muhammad Soho were also present.

“Education and health is the responsibility of the government, but the importance of the private sector in boosting these sectors cannot be overlooked,” said Dahar, suggesting that the curriculum should be revised as a project-based curriculum so that students are able to cope with the changing dynamics of the modern world.

“Students can face challenges in their practical lives if given specified curriculums to groom their personalities,” he said, adding that the education department has taken many reputed institutions on board.

While lauding the role of NGOs in promoting education, Dahar asked them to come forward and cooperate with the government to spread education in every part of Sindh. “It is the need of the hour to see the curriculum as a source of comprehensive learning,” he said.

Meanwhile, Roy informed Dahar that his trust was interested in launching a training programme for public school teachers because teachers play a key role in uplifting educational institutions.

Roy also pointed out that his NGO will provide training to 60 teachers in the first phase and gradually increase the number of teacher training institutions.

AIOU to set up eight FM radio stations

ISLAMABAD: Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) will set up eight FM radio stations at regional headquarters by the end of this year to provide media support to the students in their academic pursuits.

This was said here on Monday at the annual progress-review presentation meeting of the university's Institute of Educational Technology (IET). The meeting was presided over by the Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Shahid Siddiqui who announced that all necessary measures would be taken for capacity-building of the staff engaged in students-related services.

The AIOU, he added, would continue to hold professional development's workshops. In the present era of a fast-changing scenario, he said only those learning organisations could survive that adopt result-oriented techniques. On Centre’s advice: Teachers recalled for census duty

LAHORE: A day after exempting schoolteachers from census duties, the Punjab government has reversed its decision reportedly on the insistence of the federal government. The teachers will now carry out their examination as well as the population count duties along with officers from government departments.

The School Education Department (SED) has, however, been directed to make sure no there is no clash of schedules between the census training and the Punjab Examination Commission (PEC) examinations of Class-V and Class-VIII.

Schoolteachers across the province will begin training for the upcoming census from today (Monday) as the provincial government has decided to retract its earlier decision of not using their services.

According to reports, the decision was taken late Saturday evening on the intervention of a federal minister, who asked the Punjab government not to withdraw teachers from census services.

The decision to withdraw the earlier order on a weekend took many teachers by surprise as the earlier decision had come came directly from the Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Talking to The Express Tribune, Punjab Teachers’ Union (PTU) General Secretary Rana Liaquat Ali termed the decision ‘strange’. “It was taken at an odd hour that too on a holiday,” he speculated. “The teachers have been informed about the training sessions of the census just one day earlier.”

In a message to all district education authorities (DEAs) and their respective CEOs, the SED withdrew its instructions issued on February 3 regarding the cancellation of census duty of teachers. “Teachers deputed shall perform their census duty as per instructions issued earlier,” it said.

On February 2, the School Education Department had aired concerns about overlapping duties of examinations and census. The notification directed officials to take appropriate measures to perform both exercises without any default or disturbance.

Students Depict Indian Atrocities In IHK In Posters

ISLAMABAD, Feb 4 (Pakistan Point News - 04th Feb, 2017 ): The Nazriya Pakistan Council (NPC) Saturday held a posters' competition among the students of twin cities in collaboration with a youth organization AFAQ Leader's Club in connection with the Kashmir Day. About 50 students participated in this competition making posters highlighting the atrocities of the Indian forces against the people of Indian Held Kashmir (IHK), said a press release.

AIOU announces various programs result

Islamabad: Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) has announced the final results of PhD and M.Phil Programs (Semester Spring, 2016) and published the all these results at its official website.

ThePhD programs for which the university has announced the results includes Chemistry and Physics whereas M.Phil programs for which the university has announced the result includes Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics.

On the other hand, the result of teachers’ training programs includes PTC, CT, ATTC and B.Ed have also been announced by the officials of university.

Furthermore, the varsity has announced that the results of inter program would be announced by next week whereas results of BA will be announced by the mid of February.

Result cards have also been dispatched to the students via post at their given addresses.

PMDC announces NEB exam schedule

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) has announced National Examination Board (NEB) schedule for Pakistani nationals having foreign basic medical qualifications.

NEB is conducted by PMDC for those medical graduates who have passed their exams from abroad. The exam was started following complaints that doctors who study in languages other than English face problem in treating patients. Moreover there were also complaints about the quality of education.

In 2012 through an act of parliament it was made mandatory for foreign graduates to pass NEB.

However some postgraduate qualifications like diploma of American Board, FRCS (UK) or equivalent are exempted from NEB.

During the last four years, foreign graduates have held protests against the council and alleged that it was involved in corruption and nepotism during NEB exams which are based on three steps.

Acting PMDC registrar Dr Syed Azhar Ali Shah has stated that the last date for submission of application for Step-I exam is Feb 13 and the exam will be held on March 16.

“For Step-II, candidates can submit applications from March 27 to April 3, and the exam will be held on May 4. For Step-III, the application can be submitted from May 15 to 24th. The exam will be held on July 8 and 9th,” he said.

PMDC President Prof Dr Shabir Lehri said the format of NEB exam had been changed to make the examination more transparent.

“Exam of first two steps will be based on MCQs, whereas Step-III format shall remain the same as approved by the council,” he said.

Dr Lehri said the council had introduced a new challan form system for candidates for which they have to visit PMDC’s website and follow the instructions to fill the challan and submit the fee. Fee in the form of drafts will not be acceptable any more, he said.

SLS School awards high achievers

Sadeeqa's Learning System (SLS) Montessori and High School held a ceremony to recognise and award its high achievers of SSC examinations of the FBISE, says a press release.

A total of 138 students, securing above 90% were awarded medals for their outstanding performance for the years 2013 to 2016. Special cash prizes were given to the students who secured the top three positions from all the high school campuses of SLS.

Aleem Qureshi, controller examinations, Federal Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (FBISE) and Zareen Jamshed, eminent educational consultant were the guests of honour. Managing Director of SLS Schools, Asiya Talha began the ceremony with a welcome address congratulating all the students, parents, heads and teachers. She recognised all the campus heads, teachers, coordinators and school staff and stressed the importance of teamwork at SLS. She said while the team at SLS and parents love and effort were the most important ingredients for student success. She advised the students to remember that success did not necessarily mean happiness and that they must find ways of giving back to their communities.

The address was followed by a dance performance on Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and AR Rahman's collaboration 'Gurus of Peace' song. The performance implored the audience to not wait for another day and to start with themselves to bring change. After the performance, the medal giving ceremony began. The top three position holders received their medals and cash prizes and the hall thundered with applause.

An intermission took place with a skit on 'Respect for All.' Students used the skit to demonstrate how we overlook plants and trees when we talk about respect and how pertinent they are to our life with every breath that we take dependent upon them.

NUST Model United Nations concludes

Islamabad: The students at the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) successfully conducted the fifth edition of the NUST International Model United Nations conference from February 2 to 5. The conference was titled Together towards Tomorrow.

In keeping with the tradition of addressing the most important issues of today the debate this year was larger than ever both in impact and scale as current scenarios and future projections related to 7 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of UN S 2030agenda were considered.

Issues ranging from battling inequality to taking active responsibility for our home Earth were raised. More than 600 delegates from around 60 universities attended the conference. The delegates included around 60 foreign participants making it one of the largest Model United Nations simulation in Pakistan surpassing NUST s precedent editions.

Around fourteen committees were simulated which included popular simulations such as the Security Council (UNSC) the Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC) the Social Humanitarian and Cultural Committee (SOCHUM) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) along with specialized and newer simulations such as CONSILIUM Council of the European Union the National Crisis Cell (NCC) and the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

SPECPOL ECOFIN Futuristic Security Council UNICEF UNEF UNHCR and the NIMUN Crisis Council were also simulated.

The conference also featured a diplomatic meet where reputed dignitaries from various bodies of the United Nations and regional bodies attended the conference as part of a Delegate Diplomat interaction session.

The attendee list included Indrika Ratwatte (UNHCR Representative) Daniel Timme (UNICEF) Ambassador Hassan Javed and Ms. Federica Lacava.

To create an environment of friendship and promote interaction amongst diverse individuals several social events were also conducted which included the Global Aldea a celebration of nations united under one roof.

Registration of fake case against student protested

MARDAN: The relatives and friends of an MPhil student on Sunday protested against the alleged thrashing and registration of a fake case against him by the officials of the Takht Bhai Police Station.

The protesters gathered near the Mardan Press Club and later blocked the Shamsi Road for traffic as a mark of protest and sought judicial inquiry into the incident.

Lahore International book fair 2017 kicks off at Expo Centre

Lahore: The largest book fair of the country “Lahore International Book Fair-2017” featuring almost 275 local as well as foreign publishers started at Expo Center here on Thursday.

The 5-day book fair, along with the free entry during all days of the event, attracted large number of book lovers on the first day.

The book fair was inaugurated by Punjab Minister for Higher Education Syed Raza Ali Gillani who also visited various stalls.  

The minister appreciated the organizers of the book fair, saying that such events played a vital role in promoting the habit of book reading among the public.

He praised the presence of young generation at the venue. He said books promoted healthy social behavior in society by sensitizing the readers regarding the positive regions of life. Almost all the participating publishers are offering special discount on books ranging from 20% to 50% and even more discount in some cases. The open venue offers thousands of books on a large number of topics under one roof.

The 31st Lahore International Book Fair 2017 has been arranged by the Lahore International Book Fair (LIBF) Trust in association along with the Pakistan Publishers and Booksellers Association.  LIBF Trust administrator Saleem Malik said the LIBF book fair was an annual event which had been promoting a very positive activity over the years.

Saleem Malik said, organized in February each year, the LIBF book fair was signal of spring and suggested that the Punjab government could own this book fair as part of its yearly spring festival.

“The government can at least provide the site on subsidized rates,” he said.

The book fair will continue till February 6th, 2017 from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM.
