PMDC announces NEB exam schedule

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) has announced National Examination Board (NEB) schedule for Pakistani nationals having foreign basic medical qualifications.

NEB is conducted by PMDC for those medical graduates who have passed their exams from abroad. The exam was started following complaints that doctors who study in languages other than English face problem in treating patients. Moreover there were also complaints about the quality of education.

In 2012 through an act of parliament it was made mandatory for foreign graduates to pass NEB.

However some postgraduate qualifications like diploma of American Board, FRCS (UK) or equivalent are exempted from NEB.

During the last four years, foreign graduates have held protests against the council and alleged that it was involved in corruption and nepotism during NEB exams which are based on three steps.

Acting PMDC registrar Dr Syed Azhar Ali Shah has stated that the last date for submission of application for Step-I exam is Feb 13 and the exam will be held on March 16.

“For Step-II, candidates can submit applications from March 27 to April 3, and the exam will be held on May 4. For Step-III, the application can be submitted from May 15 to 24th. The exam will be held on July 8 and 9th,” he said.

PMDC President Prof Dr Shabir Lehri said the format of NEB exam had been changed to make the examination more transparent.

“Exam of first two steps will be based on MCQs, whereas Step-III format shall remain the same as approved by the council,” he said.

Dr Lehri said the council had introduced a new challan form system for candidates for which they have to visit PMDC’s website and follow the instructions to fill the challan and submit the fee. Fee in the form of drafts will not be acceptable any more, he said.

SLS School awards high achievers

Sadeeqa's Learning System (SLS) Montessori and High School held a ceremony to recognise and award its high achievers of SSC examinations of the FBISE, says a press release.

A total of 138 students, securing above 90% were awarded medals for their outstanding performance for the years 2013 to 2016. Special cash prizes were given to the students who secured the top three positions from all the high school campuses of SLS.

Aleem Qureshi, controller examinations, Federal Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (FBISE) and Zareen Jamshed, eminent educational consultant were the guests of honour. Managing Director of SLS Schools, Asiya Talha began the ceremony with a welcome address congratulating all the students, parents, heads and teachers. She recognised all the campus heads, teachers, coordinators and school staff and stressed the importance of teamwork at SLS. She said while the team at SLS and parents love and effort were the most important ingredients for student success. She advised the students to remember that success did not necessarily mean happiness and that they must find ways of giving back to their communities.

The address was followed by a dance performance on Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and AR Rahman's collaboration 'Gurus of Peace' song. The performance implored the audience to not wait for another day and to start with themselves to bring change. After the performance, the medal giving ceremony began. The top three position holders received their medals and cash prizes and the hall thundered with applause.

An intermission took place with a skit on 'Respect for All.' Students used the skit to demonstrate how we overlook plants and trees when we talk about respect and how pertinent they are to our life with every breath that we take dependent upon them.

NUST Model United Nations concludes

Islamabad: The students at the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) successfully conducted the fifth edition of the NUST International Model United Nations conference from February 2 to 5. The conference was titled Together towards Tomorrow.

In keeping with the tradition of addressing the most important issues of today the debate this year was larger than ever both in impact and scale as current scenarios and future projections related to 7 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of UN S 2030agenda were considered.

Issues ranging from battling inequality to taking active responsibility for our home Earth were raised. More than 600 delegates from around 60 universities attended the conference. The delegates included around 60 foreign participants making it one of the largest Model United Nations simulation in Pakistan surpassing NUST s precedent editions.

Around fourteen committees were simulated which included popular simulations such as the Security Council (UNSC) the Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC) the Social Humanitarian and Cultural Committee (SOCHUM) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) along with specialized and newer simulations such as CONSILIUM Council of the European Union the National Crisis Cell (NCC) and the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

SPECPOL ECOFIN Futuristic Security Council UNICEF UNEF UNHCR and the NIMUN Crisis Council were also simulated.

The conference also featured a diplomatic meet where reputed dignitaries from various bodies of the United Nations and regional bodies attended the conference as part of a Delegate Diplomat interaction session.

The attendee list included Indrika Ratwatte (UNHCR Representative) Daniel Timme (UNICEF) Ambassador Hassan Javed and Ms. Federica Lacava.

To create an environment of friendship and promote interaction amongst diverse individuals several social events were also conducted which included the Global Aldea a celebration of nations united under one roof.

Registration of fake case against student protested

MARDAN: The relatives and friends of an MPhil student on Sunday protested against the alleged thrashing and registration of a fake case against him by the officials of the Takht Bhai Police Station.

The protesters gathered near the Mardan Press Club and later blocked the Shamsi Road for traffic as a mark of protest and sought judicial inquiry into the incident.

Lahore International book fair 2017 kicks off at Expo Centre

Lahore: The largest book fair of the country “Lahore International Book Fair-2017” featuring almost 275 local as well as foreign publishers started at Expo Center here on Thursday.

The 5-day book fair, along with the free entry during all days of the event, attracted large number of book lovers on the first day.

The book fair was inaugurated by Punjab Minister for Higher Education Syed Raza Ali Gillani who also visited various stalls.  

The minister appreciated the organizers of the book fair, saying that such events played a vital role in promoting the habit of book reading among the public.

He praised the presence of young generation at the venue. He said books promoted healthy social behavior in society by sensitizing the readers regarding the positive regions of life. Almost all the participating publishers are offering special discount on books ranging from 20% to 50% and even more discount in some cases. The open venue offers thousands of books on a large number of topics under one roof.

The 31st Lahore International Book Fair 2017 has been arranged by the Lahore International Book Fair (LIBF) Trust in association along with the Pakistan Publishers and Booksellers Association.  LIBF Trust administrator Saleem Malik said the LIBF book fair was an annual event which had been promoting a very positive activity over the years.

Saleem Malik said, organized in February each year, the LIBF book fair was signal of spring and suggested that the Punjab government could own this book fair as part of its yearly spring festival.

“The government can at least provide the site on subsidized rates,” he said.

The book fair will continue till February 6th, 2017 from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM.

Teachers Upgradation and Promotion New Rules by Education Department

Government of Punjab, School education Department has decided to take test for upgrdation and promotion of teachers PSTs (BPS-09), ESTs (BPS-14), SSTs) (BPS-16). All the educator are promoted in next scale after qualifying the departmental test.

As we know that the promotion rules of teachers in education department punjab are simply conducted through the seniority basis but now it is essential to pass / qualify the test for promotion.
Education Department is now preparing the seniority lists of teachers according to the PEEDA ACT.
Rana Mashood Ahmad Khan Education Minister of Punjab said during addressing in Childrens Library Complex that teachers promoions are made through conducting of tests after training.

  • Convocation registration is not mandatory for all students if they are not attending convocation.

PU VC inaugurates examination halls at IAS

All set to establish NUST campus in Sialkot

The Federal Government of Pakistan has released the needed primary funds to establish a dedicated campus of the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) in Sialkot, said the Federal Minister on Tuesday.

While talking to the media sources in Islamabad, the Federal Minister for Defence, Water and Power, Khawaja Muhammad Asif, said that a special grant of worth PKR 180 million was released as the first installment in order to establish the campus of NUST in Sambrial, Sialkot.

Universities directed to adopt Urdu as official language

The universities of the province have been asked to use Urdu as the official language along with the instant effect and provide all communications in it, news sources reported on Tuesday.

A notification issued by the Punjab Services as well as General Administration Department instructed all university managements to take instant short-term measures to fulfill the orders.
