Free coaching classes launched for brilliant students

DAGGAR: It was fascinating to see top officials of the district government, civil and military administration flocking together at a simply arranged stage at a government school here to make pledges before students and their parents that all energies and resources would be utilised for promotion of education in the district.

The ceremony was aimed at kicking off the ‘pre-exam free coaching classes’ for brilliant students of public sector schools from across the district.

District Nazim Dr Ubaidullah was sitting in the middle of the dignitaries seated in a single row on the stage. He was flanked by Deputy Commissioner Zariful Maani, army in-charge in the district, Lieutenant Colonel Faisal, District Police Officer Irshad Khan, District Education Officer Bakhtzada, District Naib Nazim Yousaf Ali, Additional Assistant Commissioner Azmat and the coordinator of the coaching classes Shahid Khan.Miles away in another school, a similar function had been arranged simultaneously for girl students.

The speakers were careful in mentioning the names of those extending financial and other support for the ceremony and the subsequent classes. However, the deputy commissioner could not stop thanking the district government for extending all-out support for the project and the Sarhad Rural Support Programme (SRSP) for sponsoring the inaugural ceremony.

The district government has approved Rs5 million for the free coaching classes. The district nazim in his speech as a chief guest said apart from the funds they allocated for the coaching classes. He said they would provide maximum resources even beyond their capacity for promotion of quality education.

He assured the district administration of support in other good initiatives like the tree plantation, cleanliness and purging the society of the menace of drugs. Deputy Commissioner Zariful Maani said promotion of quality education was the top priority of district administration.

He said there was no dearth of resources at any level. However, he said commitment and sense of ownership were lacking. “These are our institutions and the students studying there are our children. We should own these institutions and demonstrate commitment to make the state-run institutions as the best,” he argued.

The official was confident that the students attending free coaching classes would show the best results in the upcoming board examination. He said at the end of the classes a tough examination would be given to the students and the top three students would receive commendation certificates besides cash prizes.

The official announced cash prize of Rs100,000 for the students of government schools who could get position among the top 10 in the secondary school certificate examination and Rs50,000 for the student, who could get a space among the top 20 students in the board.

Lt Colonel Faisal Khan assured support to the civil administration in its endeavours for promotion of education and other activities for the well-being of the people of the district. He said they were planning to develop the Government Centennial Model School, where the ceremony was taking place, as a model institution both in term of facilities and academics.

District Education Officer Bakhtzada was happy that his was the only district in the entire province where the unique project for the students of government school was launched by the district government and district administration from its own resources.

A total of 320 male and 60 female students have been selected for the classes on merit. They would be provided every facility so that they could make best preparation for the exam. The best teachers from across the districts have been selected for the classes.

A very tough timetable has been devised for them, which would be strictly followed under the guidance of fulltime available wardens in the institutions. Attention would also be given to the character building of the students.

Every week, a guest dinner would be arranged for the students in which a learned person would be invited to have dinner with the students and share his views and experiences with the students.A one-day trip to a scenic spot within the district would also be arranged for the students.

Educational uplift vital for better future of country

Islamabad Mayor and Capital Development Authority (CDA) Chairman Sheikh Anser Aziz said education was the foundation of civilization, prosperity and progress, adding that the future of the country depends on education.

He expressed these views while addressing as chief guest at 30th Annual Day of CDA Model School.

Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif has a vision to uplift educational standard in Pakistan and up gradation of schools in Islamabad is one such example, he said.

Health, education K-P govt priority’

PESHAWAR: Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Pervez Khattak in a veiled reference to the prime minister on Tuesday said reforms in health, education and other government departments were bigger achievements than inaugurating a motorway.

PTI, he said, took time to legislate laws for the health sector adding that a Metro Bus Service will also be launched in the provincial capital.

Addressing an inaugural ceremony of a nine bedded general Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Lady Reading Hospital, he stated that since the provincial government was focusing on reforming health sector and to facilitate the general public, medicines were being provided free of cost at health facilities and the general public was benefiting from it.

Taking a jibe at the former government, the chief minister said that all one had to do to see PTI’s achievements was to compare it to the previous government.

“Inaugurating a motorway is not something really big but besides health, we are reforming the educational sector so that the underprivileged benefit from it,” Khattak told the participants, adding that other mega projects were also underway in the province.

The new general ICU was completed at a cost of Rs50 million and Senator Ilyas Ahmad Bilour’s funds were utilized for the project. Fresh machinery with ventilators and other essential machines have also been installed. Since the funds were issued by Senator Ilyas Ahmad Bilour, Khattak ordered the ICU be named after Shabbir Bilour Shaheed.

Sindh University VC distributes laptops among 44 disabled students

Karachi: The vice-chancellor of Sindh University Prof Dr Fateh Muhammad Burfat on Saturday distributed laptops under Prime Minister’s Laptop Scheme among 44 disabled students of various degree programmes.

As per the issued press release, a simple ceremony was organized at the Department of Fresh Water Biology and Fisheries for the distribution of laptops among students.

While addressing the ceremony, the VC thanked Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif for approving a big quantity of laptops for the aspirants of Sindh University.

Rs 5.58b granted youths under PM’s Interest Free Loan Scheme

Lahore: Almost 251,351 interest free loans of worth Rs 5.58 billion have been granted to poor under Prime Minister’s Interest Free Loan Scheme.

These interest free loans under PM loan scheme have been provided in 427 union councils of 44 districts crosswise the country and 62% of loan beneficiaries were female.

Govt approves co-education in primary schools

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa cabinet on Monday made a landmark decision to introduce coeducation at primary level in the province and declared that only women teachers would be appointed to primary schools in future.

“The government will establish schools where boys and girls can study together,” said adviser to the chief minister on information Mushtaq Ghani while giving details to the media about the cabinet’s meeting here.

Teachers to stage protest outside Chief Minister House

Primary teachers unhappy with violation of transfer criteria

SUKKUR: Hundreds of primary teachers are protesting in Sukkur against their transfers to far-flung rural areas by the administration.

Most Urdu speaking teachers have been transferred to primary schools in rural areas, with those retiring within the next six to eight months also included in the list. However, favourites of Zaibunnisa Mangi, the director of primary education, Sukkur, have been not transferred.

Education dept to form Provincial Curriculum Authority

KARACHI: To maintain the quality and training of teachers, mould the curriculum according to modern needs and set goals for the education system, the provincial education and literary department is considering the formation of a ‘Provincial Curriculum Authority’.

This was stated by the department’s minister Jam Mehtab Hussain Dahar during a meeting with the founder of Zindagi Trust, Shahzad Roy, on Monday. Along with the minister, secretary education schools Mustafa Jamal Syed and additional secretary Muhammad Soho were also present.

“Education and health is the responsibility of the government, but the importance of the private sector in boosting these sectors cannot be overlooked,” said Dahar, suggesting that the curriculum should be revised as a project-based curriculum so that students are able to cope with the changing dynamics of the modern world.

“Students can face challenges in their practical lives if given specified curriculums to groom their personalities,” he said, adding that the education department has taken many reputed institutions on board.

While lauding the role of NGOs in promoting education, Dahar asked them to come forward and cooperate with the government to spread education in every part of Sindh. “It is the need of the hour to see the curriculum as a source of comprehensive learning,” he said.

Meanwhile, Roy informed Dahar that his trust was interested in launching a training programme for public school teachers because teachers play a key role in uplifting educational institutions.

Roy also pointed out that his NGO will provide training to 60 teachers in the first phase and gradually increase the number of teacher training institutions.

AIOU to set up eight FM radio stations

ISLAMABAD: Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) will set up eight FM radio stations at regional headquarters by the end of this year to provide media support to the students in their academic pursuits.

This was said here on Monday at the annual progress-review presentation meeting of the university's Institute of Educational Technology (IET). The meeting was presided over by the Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Shahid Siddiqui who announced that all necessary measures would be taken for capacity-building of the staff engaged in students-related services.

The AIOU, he added, would continue to hold professional development's workshops. In the present era of a fast-changing scenario, he said only those learning organisations could survive that adopt result-oriented techniques. On Centre’s advice: Teachers recalled for census duty

LAHORE: A day after exempting schoolteachers from census duties, the Punjab government has reversed its decision reportedly on the insistence of the federal government. The teachers will now carry out their examination as well as the population count duties along with officers from government departments.

The School Education Department (SED) has, however, been directed to make sure no there is no clash of schedules between the census training and the Punjab Examination Commission (PEC) examinations of Class-V and Class-VIII.

Schoolteachers across the province will begin training for the upcoming census from today (Monday) as the provincial government has decided to retract its earlier decision of not using their services.

According to reports, the decision was taken late Saturday evening on the intervention of a federal minister, who asked the Punjab government not to withdraw teachers from census services.

The decision to withdraw the earlier order on a weekend took many teachers by surprise as the earlier decision had come came directly from the Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Talking to The Express Tribune, Punjab Teachers’ Union (PTU) General Secretary Rana Liaquat Ali termed the decision ‘strange’. “It was taken at an odd hour that too on a holiday,” he speculated. “The teachers have been informed about the training sessions of the census just one day earlier.”

In a message to all district education authorities (DEAs) and their respective CEOs, the SED withdrew its instructions issued on February 3 regarding the cancellation of census duty of teachers. “Teachers deputed shall perform their census duty as per instructions issued earlier,” it said.

On February 2, the School Education Department had aired concerns about overlapping duties of examinations and census. The notification directed officials to take appropriate measures to perform both exercises without any default or disturbance.

AIOU announces various programs result

Islamabad: Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) has announced the final results of PhD and M.Phil Programs (Semester Spring, 2016) and published the all these results at its official website.

PMDC announces NEB exam schedule

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) has announced National Examination Board (NEB) schedule for Pakistani nationals having foreign basic medical qualifications.

NEB is conducted by PMDC for those medical graduates who have passed their exams from abroad. The exam was started following complaints that doctors who study in languages other than English face problem in treating patients. Moreover there were also complaints about the quality of education.

In 2012 through an act of parliament it was made mandatory for foreign graduates to pass NEB.

However some postgraduate qualifications like diploma of American Board, FRCS (UK) or equivalent are exempted from NEB.

During the last four years, foreign graduates have held protests against the council and alleged that it was involved in corruption and nepotism during NEB exams which are based on three steps.

Acting PMDC registrar Dr Syed Azhar Ali Shah has stated that the last date for submission of application for Step-I exam is Feb 13 and the exam will be held on March 16.

“For Step-II, candidates can submit applications from March 27 to April 3, and the exam will be held on May 4. For Step-III, the application can be submitted from May 15 to 24th. The exam will be held on July 8 and 9th,” he said.

PMDC President Prof Dr Shabir Lehri said the format of NEB exam had been changed to make the examination more transparent.

“Exam of first two steps will be based on MCQs, whereas Step-III format shall remain the same as approved by the council,” he said.

Dr Lehri said the council had introduced a new challan form system for candidates for which they have to visit PMDC’s website and follow the instructions to fill the challan and submit the fee. Fee in the form of drafts will not be acceptable any more, he said.
