Students face uncertain future as BADC awaits recognition

LARKANA: The batch of 50 students shortlisted for admission to the Bibi Aseefa Dental College (BADC) in 2016-17 session face an uncertain future as the federal ministry of health has not yet issued the much-awaited notification to grant recognition to the college.

Sources in the college told Dawn on Saturday that the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council had recommended to the ministry, after physical inspection of the college, to issue the notification, and then it sent reminders twice to do the needful, but to no avail.

Mayor gifts two buses to Urdu University

Karachi Mayor Waseem Akhter has fulfilled his promise of reserving two buses for Federal Urdu University of Arts Science and Technology (FUUAST), reported Dunya News.

The availability of new buses would facilitate the varsity students as their problems regards to conveyance would get solved to a great extent. It was almost a month ago when Mayor Karachi Waseem Akhter announced to reserve two buses for varsity students when they held a demonstration for their demands after the death of university’s students.

154 Chinese firms attend road-show for solarisation of schools in Punjab

BEIJING (China) March 10 (APP): The heads and representatives of more than 145 Chinese companies attended a road-show organized for ‘Solarisation of 20,000 Schools Programme in Punjab’ and showed their keen interest to invest in the project scheduled to be completed by the end of this year.

The road show under Khadim-e-Punjab Ujala Programme was organized by the Commercial Section of the Embassy of Pakistan.

Japan awards research scholarships to Pak students

The Government of Japan has awarded MEXT Research scholarships for masters/doctorate degrees for Year-2017 to seven (7) postgraduate students of Pakistan.

It is aimed at providing them with an opportunity to pursue higher studies in their respective fields at the public sector universities in Japan. The Embassy of Japan organized a pre-departure orientation for seven Pakistani students on Friday night who have been awarded the MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan) research scholarships by the Government of Japan.

A survey was conducted throughout the country in which numerous categories were included to study the quality of education in public schools, a private news channel reported.

Over 70pc of girls in Shangla, Kohistan out of school

SHANGLA: Over 70 per cent of girls between five and 16 years are out of school in Shangla and Kohistan districts due to lack of facilities, infrastructure and poverty, according to the District Education Rankings Report released on Saturday by Alif Ailaan, a non-governmental organisation.

According to data compiled by the NGO, Shangla is ranked 120 of the 145 districts of Pakistan, while it ranks 23 of the 25 districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The report said that almost 83 per cent of the total government schools in the district catered only to the primary level needs. There are 723 government schools in the district of which 603 are primary schools. Of these schools, 73 per cent (527) are for boys and 27 per cent (196) for girls.

Two-day conference on future of education begins

ISLAMABAD: Discussions, debates, workshops and presentations marked the first day of a two-day conference that opened on Saturday, all of which aimed to understand how external forces such as geopolitics, technology, art, culture and the environment are shaping society and pose new directions for the future of education.

The conference, titled ‘A World of Tomorrow’, began at the Pak-China Friendship Centre and was organised by Beaconhouse as part of their School of Tomorrow (SOT) conference series.

Training of millions of youth planned

Islamabad: Our target is to train millions of unemployed young boys and girls in diversified trades so that they are able to earn their livelihood and become useful citizens of the country.

This was said by NAVTTC Executive Director Zulfiqar Ahmad Cheema during a visit to the POF Technical Training Institute, Wah, on Monday. He inspected the workshops and laboratories of the institute and asked trainees and instructors about the quality of training.

He advised students to focus on the training to be in a better position to secure jobs both at local and international market. Principal of the institute, Col (r) Muhammad Riaz briefed the NAVTTC executive director about the activities of the institute. POF chairman Lt-General Omar Mehmood Hayat later presented memento to him.

Non-formal education must for higher literacy rate

Islamabad: Without non-formal education, we will not be able to achieve 90 per cent literacy rate & 100 per cent enrolment as targeted in the vision 2025 of Pakistan to achieve universal primary education. For this purpose National Commission for Human Development (NCHD) has been tasked to prepare a realistic action plan with appropriate programme interventions and necessary resources to achieve its targets for a literate society for Pakistan.

This was observed by the chairperson NCHD and former Senator Razina Alam Khan while sharing with senior management on Monday regarding her experience of two weeks visit of Japan as head of Pakistan education delegation to study the Japanese education system.

No high school in major Mohmand locality

GHALANAI: Utmanzai, a far-flung and backward yet major locality of Mohmand Agency’s Pandiali tehsil, has no high school forcing most local residents to abandon education after passing primary and middle school exams.

The people told Dawn that the area had a low literacy rate.

Agri engineering degree being launched at university

MULTAN: The Muhammad Nawaz Sharif University of Agriculture has decided to launch a four-year BS programme of agricultural engineering.

The decision was taken at the ‘agro industrial stakeholders’ discussion forum’ of the university on Monday which was held to set direction for the establishment of new faculty of agricultural and bio-systems engineering and technology.

Vice-Chancellor Dr Asif Ali said the cost of production could be reduced and crop yield could be increased by adapting modern mechanisation techniques.

PU gets last chance to contest plea against equivalance dept

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Monday gave the last opportunity to Punjab University’s counsel to contest a petition challenging functioning of equivalence department of the university.

During the hearing, Justice Atir Mahmood also observed that prima facie the functioning of the university’s equivalence department was illegal.

The judge directed the university’s lawyer to come up with a reply on the next hearing, otherwise, the court would announce its decision. The hearing was adjourned until March 14.

Students get graduation degrees at convocation

LAHORE: The third convocation of Government Degree College for Women, Wapda Town, was held here on Monday.

Around 400 students of the 2011-16 sessions were conferred graduation degrees by Higher Education Minister Syed Raza Ali Gilani. He also gave away seven gold, six silver medals and as many bronze medals to students.

17 faculty members okayed for GCU

LAHORE: The Government College University (GCU) syndicate on Monday approved the appointment of 17 senior faculty members, including four professors and five distinguished professors.

The syndicate presided over by Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Hassan Amir Shah also sanctioned a new academic programme, BA (Hons) in Sociology.
